Pagos de Viña Real Red wine
Pagos de Viña Real was born with the 2001 harvest, given the exceptional state of the vineyard. So it was decided that this wine would be the first made in the new Viña Real winery, located in Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa.
Pagos de Viña Real, is made in 40-year-old vineyards. The vineyard is called La Romera, it is almost 2 hectares in the Labastida area. It is a plot with clayey soil and boulder on the surface. The vineyard is located on the slopes of Mount Toloño, protected from the north winds and exposed to the south. Given the proximity to the mountains, the months of August and September are warm and bright during the day, lowering temperatures at night, so ripening is slow, preserving the natural acidity of the grapes.
The grapes are selected in the vineyard and collected in boxes of 20 kgs. A new selection is made in the winery and the semi-squeezed grapes are fermented with native yeasts in small tanks, controlling a temperature close to 30ºC and carrying out daily baking.
The variety is 100% tempranillo, the hot maceration lasts a few days at the end of the fermentation and it is the tastings that determine the moment of discovery. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in 300 L French oak barrels where it remains with periodic batonnages until it is clarified and bottled. It is aged for 12 months in barrels.
